Designing a website to be accessible is one of the most important aspects of website design. The actual act of ensuring that a web page is accessible is a lot more than just making sure users with disabilities can access the content of your website. It helps to ensure that the page:-
- Is written correctly
- That it will display satisfactorily and is useable in a wide range of different browsers
- That the search engines can catalogue the contents of your website successfully
After all a search engine spider / robot is only a user with special accessibility requirements.
Since October 2004, with the introduction of part of the disability discrimination act 1995 it has been a legal requirement, in the United Kingdom and the rest of europe, that business websites, are made accessible with at least the minimum standards set out in this piece of legislation, and that you don’t discriminate against visitors on the grounds of their ability to access your content. As most small business owners are no doubt aware this act is wide ranging and impacts on the way business owners operate their business.
Fortunately for web designers and the owners of websites alike these new standards are based around the W3C web accessibility standards. Designers and website owners should aim for at least Conformance to Level "Double–A" in which all priority 1 and 2 checkpoints are satisfied.
