At the moment this is issue of major concern to many UK based businesses since the introduction of the disability discrimination act, as websites now need to be made more accessible to users with a wide range of special needs. Fortunately developing the official web design standards help to deal with these issues.
We think that it is important that businesses should be at least aware of these issues, and then take them onboard, using them as a positive force within the business.
Not including accessibility support within a website could alienate a large proportion of a business’s potential customer base, this section of the population are statistically more likely to use on-line stores and other services. As it is easier and more convenient, for customers with disabilities to search for goods on-line, order them and have them delivered directly to their home than to physically go traipsing round the shops searching for what they want!
Other Website Accessibility Issues
As the pace of technological development continues unabated, it is important to realise that website accessibility is not just about giving access to customers with disabilities it also encompasses allowing users of this emerging technology, such as mobile devices ( handheld pc’s PDA, and of course the new smart phones), to access the information and data contained within your website. Whilst this is at present a niche area, this will grow in importance as wireless communication develops and the different technologies begin to merge and develop into essential communications and information collection devices.
